Education is a fundamental right of every child. Yet some children cannot exercise this right, simply because they live too far away from the nearest school.

The Chaco region in Paraguay is so sparsely populated that schools are out of reach for most children, who grow up on the farms where their parents work. The San Isidro Labrador School is one of 30 boarding schools in the Chaco region, welcoming students who often live hundreds of kilometres from the nearest public school. This inter-congregational project is jointly implemented by the De La Salle Brothers and the Cluny Sisters.

Due to its extremely remote location, students as well as teachers and support staff live at the school. This makes San Isidro Labrador more than just a school. It is a home to teachers and students alike; a place to learn and grow together, a place for sharing experiences and values. This shared experience is felt so strongly that most of the teachers and support staff living in the school are former students themselves.

Misean Cara supports this project through training on child safeguarding, children’s rights and teaching methodologies. Additionally, some of the teachers’ homes, which were damaged due to recent flooding, are being refurbished, further contributing to San Isidro Labrador being a safe and dignified home for teachers and students alike.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, some of Misean Cara’s funding was redirected to prepare hygiene kits and booklets with monthly school lessons for all students. The very dedicated teachers of the school have found creative solutions to ensure that all students are continuously supported in their learning – even if that has meant sending teaching material with regional buses or travelling vendors to an area closer to the children’s home.
